Lewis qualified as a solicitor in 2019 and joined Gibson & Co. in 2020. A modern languages graduate from the University of St Andrews (where he was a Rector’s Scholar and a St Salvator’s Scholar), he obtained distinctions in the Graduate Diploma in Law and the Legal Practice Course before training at Hogan Lovells in London and Paris. He qualified there into one of the City’s leading commercial litigation teams before joining Gibson & Co. in his native north-east. In 2025, he qualified as a civil solicitor-advocate, entitling him to exercise higher rights of audience in all civil courts in England and Wales.
He has experience acting for major corporate clients, governmental bodies, SMEs and individuals on a wide range of contentious commercial work including contract and trust disputes, professional negligence claims, shareholder and partnership disputes, regulatory proceedings, conspiracy claims and debt enforcement. Much of his work has a cross-border element, and he has recently advised on extensive worldwide freezing orders, enforcements of overseas judgments in England, and a high-value contract dispute with parallel proceedings in the Netherlands.
He has a particular interest in company and insolvency law, representing directors and shareholders in claims brought by officeholders and advising companies on bringing and resisting winding-up petitions, and on bankruptcy petitions. He also has substantial experience in representing clients in unfair prejudice claims under section 994 of the Companies Act.
He acts for clients in routine and complex residential possession claims on both the landlord and tenant side, as well as boundary disputes, co-ownership / trust disputes and adverse possession claims.
He lives in Newcastle with his wife and their two cats. As well as English, he speaks French and Russian (and is always trying to learn more). Outside of work he enjoys travelling, history, pub quizzes, wine, backgammon, antiques, and following Newcastle United.
